A Colchester man faces felony charges after police say he intentionally broke multiple bones of a seven week-old infant.

Friday, February 14, the Chittenden Unit for Special Investigations (CUSI) was referred a case by the Vermont Department for Children & Families (DCF) regarding the potential physical abuse of a 7-week-old infant. The child was brought to the University of Vermont Medical Center (UVMMC) and discovered to have multiple broken bones.

The child was seen by the UVMMC Child Safe Medical Team and CUSI began an investigation with DCF immediately. Detective Tom Chenette was assigned to this investigation along with a Family Services Worker from the DCF Burlington District Office.

A CUSI statement said the investigation developed probable cause to believe that the child’s father, Joshua Richland, caused these injuries through his own intentional actions. Richland was arrested without incident at his Colchester home on Saturday, February 15, and taken into custody for processing. Richland was later ordered to be released on Court Conditions by a Superior Court Judge. Richland’s initial court arraignment is currently scheduled for Tuesday, February 18.

Conviction of Cruelty to a Child resulting in Serious Bodily Injury carries a prison sentence of not more than 10 years or fined not more than $20,000, or both. A person who commits the crime of Aggravated first degree Domestic Assault shall be imprisoned for not more than 15 years or fined not more than $25,000, or both, police say.

Richland’s LinkedIn page claims he is a “Security Operations Center Analyst II at NuHarbor Security.”

  1. What is wrong with our justice system in Vermont ? Court Conditions ? What about the safety of the child . . . and the rights of the child for safety. Should have required bail. This is not equal justice. The judge should be ashamed ❗

  2. Lock this POS up…………… what a pathetic human, well he’s more like an animal and needs to be in a cage !!

I bet we can get volunteers to do the same to him, see if he likes it …….

  3. If you want to disfigure or kill your child with impunity, you should do it before they are born. Vermont now has a Constitutional amendment that protects your right to do that.

    • The critical issue in my mind is protecting that child from subsequent injury! Is the a restriction of the deferment’s contactvwith th child?

  4. The new gang in the state house will be looking at judicial rules and lets see how that works out.

  5. “Dad”??? That’s NO dad. That is a pathetic low-life sniveling cowardly animal who approximately 11 months ago decided to have sex to pleasure his narcissistic animal instincts and who now deserves nothing less than attempted murder charges & a date in court and in the worst prison beyond imagination.

The “judge” deserves LESS than that.

  6. Impeach Sara George.
Refuses to defend a seven week old infant!
Chittenden County States Attorney is a poor excuse of a human being.
Refuses to defend a seven week old infant!
    But everyone already knew that.
Ms. George needs to be removed; and her lackies.
Refuses to defend a seven week old infant!
They are a text book example of incompetence.

    • If it were simply incompetence, it would be easier to accept in this age of the word salad progressive. What we have for a State’s Attorney is a truly evil marxist Alinskyite who operates under his Rules for Radicals playbook, and the really sad part is that she was put in place by voters…twice.

  7. Not much to go on with this story. Where is mom? What are the living arrangements? Drugs involved? Vermont is not a safe place for children, that is for sure.

But if you read VtDigger, the only people committing crimes are the police, singing rap music, pulling over speeders in anti*Semitic ways, profiling drug dealers….harassing law breakers visiting our state from other countries…

Waiting for a reduction in staff at Vt digger due to unforeseen economic hardships……no more ngo money! Can front porch forum be far behind?

  8. The politicians of Vermont are disappointed they can’t pass any new gun control laws over this incident.

“We do it for the children”. – Nancy Pelosi

  9. Judge must be dismissed. This is insane, unlikely it could happen in VT pre 1975 and the democrat rise!!

  10. He must of have had additional children at home he has not reached yet.

Judge was being proactive. Sad POS all around.

It may be past time that Vermont brought back and used the death penalty.
