BARRE —  A homeless Barre man is due in court today to face criminal charges of assault and robbery and possession of crack cocaine after he reportedly beat and stole the wallet of an elderly man, Barre City Police said.

Police said they jailed Carlos Manuel Perez, 33, for lack of $3,500 bail at the state prison in St. Johnsbury following the arrest on Saturday.

A man with the same name as the robber, had racked up by May 2015 more than 30 charges of violating conditions of release imposed by state judges, according to the Caledonian Record newspaper.

A Barre shopper about 1 p.m. Saturday had exited a business on North Main Street and was followed to his car by the suspect, police said.   The homeless man said he wanted money for kerosene, but the shopper declined, Police Chief Braedon S. Vail said.

Perez reportedly confronted the man behind 88 North Main Street and threw him to the ground, police said.

Investigating Barre Officer Michael Reale was told the robber ran off with the wallet of the victim, who sustained a minor head injury and general soreness.

The name of the victim was not released by police.

Video surveillance of the incident determined the robber was Perez, police said.

About 3 hours after the robbery, a Montpelier Police officer spotted Perez outside a business in Berlin, Chief Vail said.  Perez was arrested without incident and was found to reportedly have a partial gram of crack cocaine, the chief said.

Berlin Police said last month that Perez had fled from officers when they were looking for him to serve trespass notices for some local businesses due to aggressive panhandling.

He was spotted walking on North Main Street in Barre on Nov. 12, but before an officer could make contact Perez took off, police said. Officers were unable to locate Perez that night.  Officers knew Perez had a curfew that he was in violation of when they attempted to make contact with him, police said.

Police were able to locate Perez three days later again walking on North Main Street in Barre City.  An officer made contact with Perez and advised him they had multiple trespass notices for him.  Officers also advised Perez he was in violation of his court-ordered curfew from the other night, police said.

Officers took Perez into custody and transported him to the Berlin Police Department for processing. He was later released with a citation ordering him into criminal court.

  1. I would certainly consider bodyslamming an elderly man “aggressive panhandling”.
You can buy a lot of kerosene for the price of a gram or 2 of crack, so I would say that Senor Perez has a problem with how he allocates his financial resources. Perhaps the pervasive progressive mindset of Vermont has assured him that access to fuel is a human right that cannot be refused upon request. Since he also seems to be in need of housing, may I suggest an OLD Vermont tradition that pre-dates the free motel room program, sometimes referred to as the greybar motel.

  2. Just another ” POS” roaming the streets of Vermont, sooner or later he will get real justice from the wrong victim……… Karma !!

  3. I heard the victim was 63 years old? Gosh, hope that’s not considered “elderly” !!?

  4. Vermont has now become a dirty movie and the terror plot will keep playing out until enough people have had enough.

  5. Barre is as seedy and gross as Burlington. The woke have taken over residences, opened up alphabet mafia friendly spaces, hung the inverted rainbow flags on churches and businesses, a Palestine flag hangs on a North Main Street business, the walking dead drug addicts shuffle around to and fro, open drug dealing on the streets, the homeless shuffle down Route 302 to Berlin and back for something to do, the elderly are forgotten and struggling, the rest just drive through the city, dodging all the deep, numerous potholes, pretending they don’t see the scourge and desperation.

Doesn’t matter to raise an issue with City leaders, their answer is to raise taxes and fees because the City is falling apart – literally and figuratively. Incompentence? Yes. Fraud? Absolutely! Some say they are fighting, yet passively and trying to reason with Cluster B sadists. Our City Manager makes nearly $250K a year – he was hired after working for the New York City education department under Mayor Deblasio. Grifters gotta grift. The infilitration is the invasion and the results speak for themselves. They don’t care – they are paid handsomely, with benefits, regardless if their policies and leadership woefully fails.

  6. Another in a list of those suspicious individuals with long names. Guess they don’t work because lack of space to sign their names on job applications…Would assume the same reason they can’t file income taxes. Snowflake judicial system plays Monopoly with these felons…$200 for passing Go after doing nothing, and getting never ending supplies of “Get Out of Jail Free” cards.
