75-year-old man charged with road rage assault on 20-year-old

A road rage incident on Rt 2 near Ferry Rd led to a 75-year-old Grand Isle man being charged with assault on July 20, the Newport Dispatch reports.

Vermont State Police responded to the scene at 5:25 p.m. after reports of an altercation. Upon arrival, officers discovered that Jack Deforge had exited his vehicle and assaulted 20-year-old Ryan Recore from Plattsburgh, NY.

Recore was attended to by EMS at the scene and was found to have sustained minor injuries during the confrontation.

Deforge has been cited to appear in Grand Isle County Superior Court to face charges of Simple Assault and Disorderly Conduct.

The date for his court appearance has not been disclosed.

Old schoolhouse believed torched – At 4 AM on July 19, the Wheelock Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a structure fire at 31 Blakely Road, the old, abandoned Wheelock schoolhouse. They found the structure fully involved. Fire suppression efforts were isolated to an exterior attack due to the stability of the structure. Despite the fire department’s efforts, the structure was unable to be saved.

Members of the VSP Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit responded to the scene and conducted an investigation into the origin and cause of this fire. There was no power to the structure and it was unoccupied at the time of the fire.

This fire remains under investigation and is considered suspicious. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Det. Sgt. James Wright at the Shaftsbury Barracks at 802-748-3111.

Remains likely those of missing elderly woman – During the ongoing search for Roberta Martin, the Vermont State Police located human remains at about 11 a.m. Sunday in a wooded area off Sand Hill Road in Enosburg.

The is close to Ms. Martin’s home. The human remains are believed to be those of Ms. Martin. The remains will be sent to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington.

No one is currently in custody. This investigation remains active and ongoing, and the Vermont State Police would like to speak to anyone who has information that could assist detectives. To share tips, people should call the St. Albans Barracks at 802-524-5993.
