On August 1, the State of Vermont published the new property tax rate for every municipality. Based on the statewide property tax increase of 13.91%, some local rates are higher and some lower based on the state’s complicated educational funding formula.
Killington, a “ski town” with a considerable number of second homes and business properties, appears to be the biggest loser in both homestead and non-homestead property tax rates. According to the State of Vermont tables, the homestead property tax rate has increased 31%, and the non-homestead (second homes, businesses, apartments) about 27%.
One of the reasons for Killington’s highest-in-the-state tax increase may be its low level of real estate appraisal. Real estate in Killington is appraised at about 52% of its actual value, according to the table. Conversely, some communities with the lowest tax increases – such as Stamford – are appraised at above the ‘common level of appraisal.’
The local tax rates appear to be computed by multiplying the ‘district rate’ – varying by degrees from the 13.91% increased statewide rate set by the Legislature – by the community’s level of real estate appraisal. Individual property owners’ tax bills will vary depending on income.

Next year is another year for increases on this year’s school tax increases. Montpelier really loves the taxing liberals in the Ed Dept. It’s like the song WALTZING WITH MATILDA. They’re wearing out brushes scrubbing each other back. How to reform this? The portion of school money confiscation from the collected (by force) by the town is 80%, the town gets 20%. The looser, owning property.
These Montpelier individuals have to earn their taxpayer salaries, so they have to raise taxes to justify their employment. WALTZING MATILDA, round and round the Mulberry bush.
Interesting, in the West the skies are deep blue and the sun is shining.

This is the inevitable result in a state with one-party rule and the majority party is OWNED lock, stock and barrel by the VTNEA teachers’ union. Public sector unions in general are an evil force on our entire society. They function to maintain their favored party’s power by acting as a conduit of public money from bloated salaries to union dues through contributions almost exclusively made to the democrat party, who then do their bidding. The idiot voters ultimately have the power to override this mess, but are swayed like sheep by the media who also derive their power from the majority party by all the money that is spend on ads. STOP VOTING FOR DEMOCRATS/PROGRESSIVES and this all ends.
