Stabbed four times in his sleep/ father steals son’s car/ Putney hate crime

A Montpelier man has been arrested for stabbing a Barre man four times in his sleep.

At about 7:15 AM on Sunday, November 3, Barre City officers were called to a Merchant Street home in Barre for a reported stabbing. They found that a 28-year-old male resident had been stabbed. 

The victim reported he had been sleeping when he woke up to being stabbed by a male, later identified as 30-year-old Philip Mensah of Montpelier. The victim was stabbed four times; once in his neck, twice in his shoulder and once in his arm. Mensah was said to have been at the residence visiting one of the victim’s housemates. 

Mensah was allegedly pulled off the victim and then fled the residence. He was located a short distance from the residence and taken into custody after a short struggle. The victim was treated at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin and subsequently released. Mensah was lodged at the Northeastern Correctional Center in St. Johnsbury where he was ordered held without bail. He is due to appear in court today to answer the charges of Attempted Homicide and Impeding Officers. 

Father steals son’s car, police report

9 PM Sunday Nov. 3, Noah Richards of Nashua NH called 911 to report his father, Robert Richards, had stolen his vehicle and he was following it on Brockway Mills Road in Rockingham, Windham County, VT. Shortly after, the vehicles crashed, and Robert left the scene of the accident.

Police say Robert operated Noah’s vehicle without his consent and with intention to keep it from Noah. Robert was located shortly after the incident and taken into custody without issue. Robert was transported to the  Springfield Police Department and released with a citation to appear in court Dec. 31 to answer to the charges of Grand Larceny, Operating without Owner’s Consent, and Leaving the Scene of an Accident.

Hate crime in Putney

At 1 AM Saturday Nov. 2, state police learned of an altercation involving a firearm on Vinegar Lane in Putney. Troopers spoke with victims and witnesses to the incident and determined Zachary Goldberg, 42, of Putney, had pointed a firearm at an individual, used abusive and hateful language, caused a disturbance to the peace and threatened people.

Goldberg was subsequently arrested for Aggravated Assault with a Weapon, Reckless Endangerment, Disorderly Conduct, Criminal Threatening, and Hate Crime. Police did not specify the nature of the hate crime. He was cited to appear in court at 12:30 PM today, Monday November 4.
