Gaston Bathalon, an army veteran and longtime civil servant, is withdrawing his announced candidacy for the Vermont State Senate in the Orleans County District, citing irreconcilable differences with party infrastructure over how campaigns should be run, mainly regarding fundraising and how much campaigns should spend.
The seat is currently held by John Morley, who has not indicated whether he will run for the seat in 2026.
“It all came down to fundraising. It was disheartening,” Bathalon told VDC on Sunday.
According to campaign filings dated March 15, with the Secretary of State, Bathalon raised $6,117.55 and spent $4,909.10 during his candidacy.
Bathalon plans to continue serving in his roles on the local Selectboard, School Board, Supervisory Union board, and as Town Moderator.
