Ehlers: When the coin in the coffer rings, the corporate carbon credit springs

Ask your representative at Town Meeting how they will vote on S.5, activist recommends

the medieval selling of indulgences is regaining popularity, in the form of carbon credits

by James Ehlers

James Ehlers

“Just as in the 15th and 16th centuries you could sleep with your sister and kill and lie without fear of eternal damnation, today you can live exactly as you please as long as you give your ducats to one of the companies selling indulgences. It is pernicious and destructive nonsense.”

Worked well, back in the day, for the rich … not so much for us serfs and peasants.

Fast forward.

Now, in 2023, Senator Philip Baruth and the Vermont Democratic Party are at the altar, offering siblings Green Mountain Power and  Vermont Gas Systems pardon for their incestual relationship under Mama Energir.

S. 5 will have us, however, not them, paying for their sins.

How will your state rep vote on this investor/polluter dream scheme? Ask them at Town Meeting. Record their answer.

Read more here about licenses to pollute, an issue those of us on the outside have been raising for decades:

Please also ask the media to stop portraying the fossil fuel industry and the “renewable” industry as foes and to follow the money.  Encourage them, though, to knock before they enter the boardroom. It’ll be very awkward seeing everyone without their masks on in compromising heat pump positions.
