Cohen: Vermont’s socialists sandbagged?

Democrat Molly Gray painted by leftists as a turncoat

by Ted Cohen

Shocking that the left is so surprised that former Lt. Gov. Molly Gray – Democrat running for a return to the old days – changed from masquerading as a socialist to suddenly becoming a Republican between the Democrat primary and the general election.

Vermont socialists have their panties in a wad because Gray switched from favoring a wealth tax in a candidate questionnaire they distributed to suddenly, now, opposing it.

Who can be surprised?

It’s how politicians play the obscene game of patronizing the base when they need to get to a general election. Both Democrats and Republicans do it.

The socialists were naive – dumb, actually – for putting out their questionnaire and thinking they’d get honest answers before the Democratic primary.

Like, how stupid are they?

Meanwhile the other thing that’s no surprise is a Republican radio host sandbagging Gray. Why did anyone think Kurt Wright would do otherwise? (It’s his job to create trouble for Democrats, by the way.)

But Gray is smarter than everyone. She knew exactly what she was getting into when she walked into Wright’s studio. She wanted to get out the word she is no so socialist.

Gray knows she needs to tone down her leftist pronouncements if she’s going to beat the Republican incumbent.

So who can blame her for going on Wright’s show to denounce socialism?

Republican Lt. Gov. John Rodgers, in a campaign statement quoted by Vermont Daily Chronicle editor Guy page, said Gray owes Vermonters an answer on where she stands, and who she stands with.

Rodgers needs a combination of GOP and “independent” voters to hold on to his seat so he’s glad to stir the pot.

Speaking of which, he has his own issues to try to snuff, including allegedly growing weed without a license.

So Gray being in hot water is just fine with Rodgers, who the polls are showing is way behind Gray.

Rodgers won the job two years ago by defeating incumbent Democratic socialist David Zuckerman, perhaps friend in name only of Molly Gray.

Zuckerman vacated the lieutenant governorship in a failed 2020 run against Republican Gov. Phil Scott, who beat him by a whopping 40 points.
