Two held without bail, three released

A gang of Burlington youth were arrested for a brutal gang assault in downtown Burlington in April.
Burlington police say that on April 28 at about 2 AM they responded to a report of a fight involving multiple people on Main Street. They found “multiple individuals” fleeing. One person remained on the ground.
Police say a group of individuals injured two people, one seriously. During the aggravated assault, personal possessions of both the victims were stolen. The altercation left one of the victims unconscious.
The case was assigned to the BPD’s Detective Services Bureau. After further investigation, the following suspects were identified: Abdirahman Mohammed, 22, of Burlington; Ibrahima Bangoura, 22, of Burlington; Ayub Mohamud, 23, of Winooski; Shuaib Mohamud, 21, of St. Albans City; and Kalell Picard, 19, of Essex Junction.
Between October 24 and October 28, all of the suspects listed above were taken into custody by BPD and arraigned.
Mohammed was taken into custody for Aggravated Assault and Simple Assault – at arraignment, he was held without bail. Since 2020, Mohammed has been involved in 35 incidents; 11 of them being violent assaults/incidents, 2 of them being homicides, and multiple being firearms related.
According to a December, 2022, news article by Mike Donoghue, Mohammed and Bangoura were both active participants in a fight that resulted in a stabbing death in Burlington. A man reportedly affiliated with the Crips gang and its drug distribution was arrested.
When taken into custody this week, Mohammed had been involved in a disturbance with the same victim and was in possession of a firearm on his person at that time and multiple other firearms were located in his vehicle.
Bangoura was taken into custody and charged with Aggravated Assault and Simple Assault – at arraignment, he was held without bail on violation of parole. Bangoura’s criminal history indicates: 1 failure to appear for court proceedings, 2 violations of court order or conditions, 1 felony conviction, 11 misdemeanor charges with 3 convictions, 2 of the charges were assaultive in nature, and 2 included the use of a dangerous or deadly weapon. Since 2020, Bangoura has been involved in 34 incidents; 6 violent assaults/incidents, one of them being a homicide.
A. Mohamud was taken into custody and charged with Aggravated Assault and Simple Assault – he was released on the following conditions: 24-hour curfew in St. Albans; No contact with victims; Not have, buy or use any firearm or deadly weapon; May not come to the City of Burlington. A. Mohamud’s criminal history indicates: 4 felony charges, 3 misdemeanor charges, 1 of the charges with assaultive in nature, and the assault was on an officer. Since 2019, A. Mohamud has been involved in 35 incidents; 5 violent assaults/incidents, 1 of them being listed as a homicide, drug sales related incidents, and multiple being firearms related incidents.
S. Mohamud was taken into custody for Assault & Robbery and Simple Assault – at arraignment, he was released on the following conditions: 24-hour curfew in St. Albans; No contact with victims; Not have, buy or us any firearm or deadly weapon; Must not come to the City of Burlington. Since 2021, S. Mohamud has been involved in 8 incidents; 2 violent assaults/incidents, 1 of them being a homicide.
Picard was taken into custody for Aggravated Assault – at arraignment, he was released on the following conditions: Must remain in Essex Junction between the hours of 8:30 pm and 6:00 am; No contact with victims; Must not have any contact with any other co-defendants in Burlington. Since 2023, Picard has been involved in 14 incidents, 4 of them being violent assaults/incidents.
