VTGOP mourns death of Mark Candon, former lawmaker, party leader, candidate for Congress

Tuesday afternoon long-time Republican lawmaker and activist Mark Candon of Rutland passed away in an automobile crash.

Police say Candon was the lone occupant of the car when it crossed the center line and struck a Marble Valley Transit bus on Rte. 4 in Killington Tuesday. The driver and the sole passenger of the bus were unhurt.

VTGOP Chairman Paul Dame issued the following statement.

“It has been a difficult morning for many Vermont Republicans who knew Mark Candon and have heard of his passing. Mark was one of the most affable and cheerful people I had the chance to work with over the years,” said Chairman Dame. “He had served as the Vice Chair of the Rutland County Republicans for nearly ten years, and was well-known throughout the state for his previous service in the legislature, his run for Congress and his election as a delegate to the Republican National Convention. In an age of sharp division Mark always had an calming, optimistic and cheerful disposition that will be dearly missed. He had been the critical catalyst for Rutland County’s annual golf tournament, which was a true labor of love for Mark. It is sad to think that we all won’t see him there next year. My thoughts go out to his family who are mourning the loss of an incredible father and husband. He will be dearly missed.”
