The crash occurred at 3:30 p.m. on Vermont Route 14, near Griggs Road. Troopers from the VSP Derby Barracks and Crash Reconstruction Team, responders from the Albany and Irasburg Fire Departments, and a deputy from the Orleans County Sheriff’s Department responded to the incident.
Upon first responders’ arrival on the scene, June Cleveland, 80, and Linda Major, 59, the occupants of a 2016 Chevrolet Sonic, were pronounced dead. Cleveland was the driver, police say. Passenger Cricket Santamore, 38, was airlifted from the scene by a Dartmouth-Hitchcock Advanced Response Team helicopter and is in stable condition with serious injuries.
A preliminary investigation suggests that the Sonic was traveling south on Vermont Route 14 when the operator attempted to pass another vehicle, crossing into the northbound lane of travel. The vehicles collided head-on.
The crash resulted in an approximately 3.5-hour road closure. The Vermont State Police are asking anyone with information regarding the crash to call the VSP Derby Barracks at 802-334-8881.
