State trooper injured after tractor-trailer rear-ends cruiser in snowstorm

A Vermont State Police trooper suffered minor injuries Monday evening when her cruiser was struck by a tractor-trailer on Interstate 89 during a heavy snowstorm.

According to state police, the crash occurred at approximately 5:30 p.m. on November 10 as Trooper Charlotte Hartman, 31, of Swanton, was responding to another crash on the southbound side of I-89.

Police said Hartman was attempting to navigate around stopped vehicles to reach the earlier incident when a 2020 Freightliner tractor-trailer operated by Mikhail Nikulin, 53, of Saint-Hubert, Quebec, lost control on the icy roadway and slid into the rear of her 2021 Ford Explorer cruiser. The truck also struck two other vehicles before coming to a stop.

Hartman sustained minor injuries and was transported to Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans, where she was treated and released. She has since returned to duty.

Nikulin was wearing a seat belt and was not injured. His truck sustained minor front-end damage.

Police said the crash was one of numerous incidents reported across Franklin County that evening as a result of slick roads and blowing snow from the first major storm of the season.
