
Burlington City Councilor Joan Shannon (D-South District) announced her candidacy for the position of Mayor of Burlington Thursday, November 2 on the steps of City Hall.
Shannon and City Council President Karen Paul will vie for the Democratic nomination at the Burlington Democratic Caucus on December 10. Progressive State Representative Emma Mulvaney-Stanak (P/D-Burlington). No Republicans have yet announced. Incumbent Mayor Miro Weinberger has announced he will not seek election and is said to be mulling a run for governor.
Shannon has served as a City Councilor for 20 years, including three as council president. She came to Burlington in 1985 to teach sailing. My sister went to UVM and set me up with a summer sublet,” Shannon said in a recent campaign statement. “I was supposed to go back to school in Pennsylvania, but I fell in love with Burlington’s beauty, the lake, and the enthusiasm of Burlingtonians. I then rearranged my life to permanently move here, figure out how to graduate from college, and make a living in Burlington.”
