What America needs most

By Guy Page

Today, after many hours spent writing, editing and publishing the news, I pushed back from my desk, leaned back in my chair, and wondered how America will survive.

Some days I wonder if the free, prosperous country I once arrogantly took for granted will survive in more than name only. True, America is not just about government. Neither can we survive without it. Here’s what I believe must happen.

Protect U.S. sovereignty among the nations of the world. National debt unattended and ignored could someday force us to grovel in poverty before another country or bloc of countries. “The debtor is the slave of the lender.”

Protect individual rights. Courts, legislatures and executive governments must diligently protect citizen freedoms recognized in the Bill of Rights.

Hold government accountable. From the local school superintendent to the behemoth federal bureaucracy, the executive branch must understand that elected citizens are the boss. Subject always to the Constitution, local, state and federal authorities must be ruled by, not rule over, the selectboards, schoolboards, legislatures and Congress chosen by the voters.

Said another way, America faces at least three existential threats:

This job won’t be finished in a two-year election cycle. It will take decades of choosing short-term pain in the hope of longterm gain. On the other hand, it’s nothing new. It’s just practicing what we learned in junior high civics class.
