How social media and online news algorithms fuel extremism across the political spectrum

In an era dominated by social media and online news consumption, the dissemination of information has become faster and more widespread than ever before. However, this immense connectivity comes at a price. Algorithms employed by social media platforms and news websites, while aiming to personalize content, inadvertently contribute to the rise of extremist views across the entire political spectrum.
The Algorithmic Echo Chamber:
Social media platforms have revolutionized the way we interact, connecting us with like-minded individuals and creating virtual communities. While this can foster a sense of belonging and provide a platform for marginalized voices, these platforms also create algorithmic echo chambers.
Algorithms are designed to prioritize content based on user preferences, leading to an information ecosystem that reinforces and amplifies existing beliefs. Very quickly, any news not fitting pre-existing notions becomes “fake news,” regardless of demographic.
