Lasses and laddies, rejoice!
The 39th annual Kirkin’ of the Tartan will be held Sunday, July 26 at 11 a.m. at the Walter Harvey Meeting House in Barnet. The event honors the area’s Scottish and Reformed Presbyterian heritages.
The Kirkin’ of the Tartans (clans) is a part of the Church of Scotland liturgy. The “Kirkin’ O’ The Tartans” is the presentation of a Scottish family’s symbol, its tartan, at a church for a blessing.
After Bonnie Prince Charlie’s Scottish forces were defeated by the English in 1746 in the Battle of Culloden, the wearing of the tartans and the playing of bagpipes were forbidden in Scotland for many years.
All are welcome to participate in this Scottish tradition.
The Caledonia County neighboring towns of Ryegate and Barnet were settled directly by Scottish immigrants in the 18th century.
