by Guy Page

House leaders announced today they will appoint a bipartisan legislative committee to investigate impeaching Franklin County’s Sheriff and State’s Attorney.

The House will introduce an impeachment investigation resolution at 3 PM today.

“The people of Franklin County deserve justice and elected officials who they can trust will hold the rule of law and to represent their community with integrity,” House Speaker Jill Krowinski said at a press conference today.

Sheriff John Grismore was elected despite viseo footage of him kicking or pushing a handcuffed suspect in the groin. State’s Attorney John Lavoie reportedly has made inappropriate remarks to staff and had engaged in unwanted, nonsexual touching.

Krowinski said the committee will have all the time it needs to conduct the investigation.

This is serious enough that it warrants consideration,” McCarthy said. The committee will be charged with “getting to the bottom of whether they have violated the public trust.”

In 1976, Washington County sheriff Malcolm Mayo was inpeached but not convicted. Krowinski said the House clerk will release a historical time-line showing precedent.
