Fourth Burlington knife assault in last week leads to arrest

By Guy Page

Another knife-related crime in Burlington led to the arrest of a 38-year-old man Wednesday evening, just days after a fatal downtown stabbing and two other knife-involved assaults.

Burlington police say Nicholas Hulbert, 38, a vagrant, was allegedly committing a retail theft at City Market at 82 South Winooski Avenue at about 6:41 PM August 19 when a store manager attempted to intervene.

Police say Hulbert then produced a knife, placing the manager in fear for his life, before fleeing on foot.

Responding officers found Hulbert less than a block from City Market and took him into custody without further incident. He was ordered held on $10,000 bail and was scheduled for arraignment Thursday, August 20, in Chittenden Superior Court.

Police classified the incident as assault robbery with a deadly weapon. It comes amid heightened concern about knife violence in Burlington following the fatal stabbing of 24-year-old Deng Dau in downtown Burlington early Saturday morning.

Also, Burlington Police reported this morning that a 50 year old vagrant, Jason Anderson, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon after an early morning August 15 stabbing at St. Paul and Bank streets that left the victim with 17 stitches in his back.

And, last Thursday, a group of juvenile e-bikers showed a knife as they assaulted an adult bike rider north of North Beach on the bikepath, leaving him injured and his tires slashed.
