Chaotic night stretches Burlington Police resources thin

Article based on BPD press release.

The Burlington Police Department faced an exceptionally challenging night Sunday on into today, with a series of major incidents stretching the department’s resources to their limits. At one point, the number of individuals in custody matched the number of officers on duty, highlighting the immense strain on the force.

According to official reports, no officers were available for service after 11:00 pm until approximately 5:20 am due to the response to these critical incidents. The department currently has 26 officers available for patrol, spread across three shifts: days, evenings, and midnights. Typically, the day and evening shifts have three to five patrol officers assigned for the entire city, while the midnight shift has two to three officers.

On the night in question, the evening shift had three officers with one supervisor, and the midnight shift had two officers with one supervisor. As the evening shift typically ends at 2:45 am, two of the three evening officers were held over on overtime to assist with calls until approximately 6:00 am, while the third officer remained on duty until around 7:00 am. Additionally, one officer from the day shift started early to help manage the call volume.

The incidents that unfolded throughout the night were numerous and varied, ranging from arson and suspicious events to trespassing, domestic disturbances, and custodial interference cases.

In one particularly harrowing incident, officers responded to a report of a domestic assault on South Willard Street. Upon arrival, they encountered Nicolelus Sanborn, 30, of Burlington, who answered the door with a firearm in hand. After a tense standoff, during which Sanborn threatened officers with a large stick and attempted to strike one of them, he was eventually taken into custody without bail.

Another incident involved Aaron Tudhope, 46, of Fairfax, who was arrested and cited for custodial interference after failing to return his child to the child’s mother, who has sole custody.

The night also saw arrests for aggravated domestic assault and misdemeanor domestic assault, with Regal Spencer, 28, of Williston, and Maria Chaparro-Hammond, 24, of Burlington, being processed and released on citations to appear in court.

As the investigations into these incidents continue, the Burlington Police Department is faced with the daunting task of ensuring public safety while operating with limited resources. The events of this chaotic night serve as a stark reminder of the challenges law enforcement officers face on a daily basis and the need for adequate staffing and support to effectively serve the community.
