Christopher Thompson of Burlington was taken into custody by Burlington police without incident on Elmwood Avenue around 2 p.m. on Sept. 9. He is being held without bail pending his arraignment scheduled for 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 10.
According to a police statement, detectives identified Thompson as the suspect in an aggravated assault that occurred nearly three weeks earlier. On the morning of Aug. 22, when a wheelchair-bound victim reported being stabbed in the face near Lake Street and Depot Street. The attack happened about 30 minutes before police were called at 9:59 a.m. Officers determined the victim and suspect did not know each other. The attacker fled on foot and was last seen in the area of Sherman Street and North Champlain Street.
Thompson has a significant criminal record in Vermont, including prior convictions for assault and robbery as well as aggravated assault with a weapon. At the time of the August stabbing, he was already out on pretrial release conditions after a July 2026 arrest for assault and robbery. During that earlier arrest he resisted officers, and a Burlington police officer was injured.
