Healing hearts in Vermont
By Pastor Leo Benjamin for MyFaithNews
Something special happened this month at Lighthouse Christian Church in Montpelier. What started as a simple Freedom from Trauma Seminar turned into a powerful move of God.
Hosted by Pastor Sue Salamah and led by Lindsay and Sharon Schieffelin, graduates of the Global Awakening School of Supernatural Ministry founded by Dr. Randy Clark, the event quickly became more than a teaching—it became an encounter.
From the moment Pastor Sue opened the morning in prayer, inviting everyone to place a hand over their heart and surrender to the Lord, the atmosphere shifted. You could feel peace descend on the room. This wasn’t just another church workshop; it was a space where people came expecting to meet God, and He met them.
A Safe Space for Healing
Sharon began the day with a heartfelt message about what trauma really is—and how the Bible has always spoken about it. She used Joseph’s story from Genesis to show how betrayal and suffering can become the very soil where God plants purpose.
Quoting Psalm 147:3 she said, “He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.” You could hear sniffles across the sanctuary. Many realized for the first time that Scripture doesn’t minimize emotional pain—it brings it into the light so healing can begin.
Then Sharon said something that hit home for everyone:
“Sometimes the church tells people, ‘Just pray more and get over it.’ But that can add shame instead of healing. You don’t get over trauma until the root is healed.”
She and Lindsay even paused to ask forgiveness on behalf of the Church. This was for times it had misunderstood or judged the wounded. That moment felt holy. Tears fell. People began to exhale years of buried pain.
How Trauma Affects the Mind and Body
Lindsay followed with teaching that blended Scripture and science. He explained how trauma affects the amygdala, hippocampus, and prefrontal cortex. He also showed how the Holy Spirit brings renewal to the mind.
“God can rewire your brain,” he said. “He created it—and He can restore it.”
He shared a testimony of a woman healed from dyslexia after prayer. “She started reading page after page with tears running down her face,” he said. “God literally rewired her brain.” The room sat silent in awe.
A Personal Journey of Praise and Healing
After the seminar, I spoke with Sharon about her own healing story. She told me about a car accident that left her in severe pain and how the Lord taught her to praise through it.
“He told me, ‘Praise Me, even though you don’t feel like it,’” she said. “Then He told me to take His promises and speak them out loud every day. My attitude shifted—and healing came.”
That was long before she ever studied healing ministry. “God was teaching me personally,” she said. “Later, when I went through training, I realized He had already shown me everything firsthand.”
Her words carried weight because they came from lived experience. You could sense why people responded so deeply to her message. She wasn’t teaching theory; she was sharing truth she had walked through.
Words of Knowledge Released
After the teaching, the day moved into what Sharon called activation. She and Lindsay prayed over everyone, asking the Holy Spirit to release words of knowledge.
“You should have seen it,” Sharon told me later. “People came forward to give words and then prayed for others. There was laughter, tears—it was beautiful.”
The session ran long because no one wanted to leave. “We were scheduled to finish by two,” Sharon said with a smile, “but the last person didn’t leave until after three. Nobody cared. They were just grateful for what God was doing.”
What I Saw That Day
I’ve been in ministry for many years, but this felt different. People weren’t just learning—they were encountering. You could hear quiet weeping all around and see faces changing as hope returned.
In Vermont, where many carry deep wounds and keep them hidden, it was amazing to see hearts opening. I walked away thinking, we need more of this here.
I told Sharon that, and she agreed.
“People in Vermont have gone through so much trauma,” she said. “They’re just surviving—but Jesus wants them free. He’s raising up communities of love and restoration.”
A Movement of Healing Begins
Lighthouse Christian Church isn’t stopping here. Lindsay and Sharon Schieffelin are hosting a (for those who want to join us from the October 25th Seminars) on November 18th, Tuesday, at 7 pm to keep the conversation going. They aim to help people continue walking out their healing.
Sharon said, “We’re open to go wherever God sends us—but we always pray first. This is His ministry, not ours.”
As I left that day, I thought of Isaiah 61:3. This verse describes how the Lord gives beauty for ashes and the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness. That’s what happened in Montpelier.
What began as a seminar became a day of laughter, tears, and freedom. It was a holy moment of healing in a small Vermont church. And maybe, just maybe, it’s the beginning of a movement.
