Veteran war correspondent Lara Logan will speak at Norwich University today as part of a two-day symposium examining how movies and other visual portrayals of war shape public understanding of military conflict.
Logan, an award-winning journalist known for reporting from war zones around the world, will appear with photojournalist Dimitri Beliakov from 10-10:50 AM Monday, Oct. 5, for “Beyond the Headlines: Documenting the Human Face of War.”
She also will participate in a 7 PM panel discussion Monday in Mack Hall with Dr. Ike Wilson, Dr. Deborah Deacon and retired Air Force Lt. Col. Dan Hampton. LTC Chris Cadigan will moderate.
The Oct. 5-6 Military Writers’ Symposium, which is free and open to the public, is centered this year on the theme “Portraying War: How Cinema Shapes Our Understanding of Conflict.”
The program brings together journalists, veterans, military experts and scholars to discuss how films depict combat and military service — and how those portrayals influence what Americans believe about war.
Tuesday’s events include “The Reality Behind the Reel: Veterans Confront Hollywood’s Version of War,” from 11 AM-12:15 PM in Mack Hall. Actress and U.S. Navy veteran Jennifer Marshall will be among the participants discussing the gap between firsthand military experience and Hollywood portrayals.
Norwich will follow the symposium Wednesday, Oct. 7, with its Day of Cyber, bringing more than 200 Central Vermont middle and high school students to campus for hands-on cybersecurity and technology exercises.
High school students will take part in “Mission to Mars — The Lost Rover,” using cybersecurity skills to investigate the fictional loss of a Mars rover. Middle school students will participate in “Operation Red Horizon,” featuring drones, rover construction, cybersecurity exercises and other mission-based activities.
The Day of Cyber will be held in Mack Hall and Plumley Armory.
