Chris Goodwin, coach of the Mid-Vermont Christian School girls basketball team, tells podcaster and former Olympic swimmer Riley Gaines that his private Christian school team is under a permanent ban from participating in Vermont school athletics, because the school forfeited a 2023 tournament game against an opposing team that included a biological male.

The school figured the suspension would be just for a year. They were ready for game one of the next season. “Game One never came,” Goodwin says.

The school’s lawsuit against the state was shot down in U.S. District Court. Alliance Defending Freedom attorneys representing Mid Vermont Christian School earlier this month argued its lawsuit in the U.S. Second Circuit Court in New York City, claiming as unconstitutional the school’s expulsion from State tournament play after the girls’ basketball team refused to take the court against a school with a biological male player.

“We’ll take it up to the Supreme Court if we have to,” an Alliance for Defending Freedom lawyer tells Gaines.
