Rutland propane rail car derails, rolls over

A rail car carrying liquefied propane derailed and rolled over near the Park Street rail crossing in Rutland City during the evening of Sept. 11, prompting a response from state and local hazardous-materials crews.

The Vermont State Hazmat Team, Rutland City Fire Department and Vermont Rail System responded to the derailment.

Officials said the propane tank was not compromised and no propane leaked.

Authorities said the incident posed no threat to public health, safety or the environment. Hazmat personnel and Rutland firefighters remained at the scene while Vermont Rail System crews worked to rerail the tank car.

The public was asked to avoid Park Street and the nearby rail crossing while emergency crews and railroad contractors completed the work.
