A man shot by a Vermont State Police trooper Monday afternoon in Putney has died.
The shooting occurred at about 4:30 p.m. at the Putney Landing Apartments at 23 Neumann Lane, where police had responded earlier in the day after receiving a complaint from an individual who was concerned about how a neighbor was acting. VSP troopers obtained a search warrant and an arrest warrant for the man living at the apartment in question.
The circumstances of the shooting remain under active investigation. The man was pronounced deceased on scene. The trooper who fired his service weapon was uninjured.
The body of the deceased man will be brought to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington for an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death. VSP will release his name following notification of relatives and further investigation.
Following standard protocol, the state police will withhold the identity of the trooper involved for at least 24 hours.
When the Vermont State Police investigation is complete, the case will be turned over to the Vermont Attorney General’s Office and the relevant State’s Attorney’s Office for independent reviews of the use of force.

Trooper crashes – Vermont State Police trooper escaped injury Saturday night after crashing his cruiser while responding to a call for service in Addison County, according to authorities.
At 11:30 p.m. on July 5, Vermont State Police received a report of a single-vehicle crash on Vermont Route 17 in the Town of New Haven. The vehicle involved was a fully marked, department-issued State Police cruiser.
Trooper Daniel Arrato, 28, of Randolph, was identified as the driver of the vehicle. Police say he was traveling eastbound on Route 17 when he failed to maintain his lane of travel and veered off the south side of the road. The passenger side of the cruiser struck a telephone pole, causing significant damage to the vehicle.
Trooper Arrato was not injured in the crash. Weather conditions were clear and the blacktop road surface was dry.
The Vermont State Police said the incident remains under investigation. No other vehicles were involved, and no civilians were harmed. It is not yet clear what caused Trooper Arrato to leave the roadway.
Big plywood theft – July 7, State Police were notified of a theft at the work zone on I 91 S Exit 15 in Lyndonville. Winterset Inc. had 65, 4 x 8 x 3/4-inch sheets of plywood stolen sometime between the night of July 3 and the morning of July 7.
