Newly released court documents show a New Jersey woman accused of driving an SUV into a crowded swimming pool at Smugglers’ Notch Resort had a blood alcohol concentration nearly twice Vermont’s legal limit, according to a report by WCAX.
The incident happened at about 3:30 PM Monday as families were cooling off at the resort pool during a warm afternoon with temperatures in the 80s. Police say a 20-year-old woman from New Jersey drove a Jeep Grand Cherokee through a fence and into the pool, where numerous people were swimming.
According to the court documents cited by WCAX, two children were injured in the crash. Their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
Investigators allege the driver’s blood alcohol concentration was nearly twice the legal limit for drivers age 21 and older. Because the driver is under 21, Vermont law prohibits operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.02% or higher.
The dramatic crash caused panic among swimmers and families at the popular resort. Emergency responders rushed to the scene, and the damaged vehicle came to rest partially submerged in the pool after smashing through the surrounding fence.
