Imagine Vermont without VDC…..

by Guy Page, Editor & Publisher, VDC

The Vermont Daily Chronicle needs your help now. Big time.

I can’t stop you from scrolling past the next few paragraphs, but please allow me to describe what a Vermont without Sustaining Subscribers contributing $108/year, or $9/month, would look like:

– No news media faithfully reporting both sides about public safety, carbon taxes, property taxes, gun control, special interests, housing control, Vermont and the Trump administration, sex-related policy and legislation, and anything else that passes our nose-for-news’ smell test.

– No news media that accepts and publishes your comments, and allows you to read real-time comments submitted by others. These comments are usually at least as interesting as the news or opinion post that inspired them.

– No news media that serves as a gathering place to read, all in one place, the wisdom of the likes of columnists Rob Roper, Don Keelan, Tom Evslin, John Bossange, Alison Despathy, John Klar, and even Johnny Bananas – and many others of all perspectives.

– No weekly video podcast, ‘Friday at Four.’

– No endless stream of Paul Bean’s interviews and reels with Vermont newsmakers.

Some readers say the property tax revolution or the public uprising against the Clean Heat Standard wouldn’t have happened without VDC’s shareable news, commentary and comments forum. I dunno. To say so smacks of delusions of grandeur. But heck yeah, we played a role. Regardless, in 2025 we will continue to stay on top of the relevant news about affordability and protecting your civil rights of free speech, bearing arms and freedom of assembly.

And as always we will do it on frugal, sometimes fraying shoestring, budget, trying to keep our hard-working people on the job. I, myself, pay myself very little; I am happy to, because I believe in the work. But that’s not a luxury our staff can afford.

Between now and when the opening gavel falls on the 2025 Session of the Legislature in early January, I will be asking the 90% of our readers who are not Sustaining Subscribers to make a first-time commitment. Starting now. And with great gratitude I will ask the much-appreciated 10% of Sustaining Subscriber readers to re-up for another year or even go above-and-beyond with their support.

We’re working on enhancing our appeal to advertisers. Beginning today, we will place Premium Advertisers’ display ads within the text of selected news articles. This is a very public expression of our gratitude for their patronage, and a call for VDC readers to patronize supportive businesses. If you are interested in learning about the FOUR special benefits of becoming a Premium Advertiser, email me at news@vermontdailychronicle.com. They look like this:

But, my fellow free-market-loving, get-what-you-pay-for readers, here is the straight deal:

Without readers stepping up, I can’t pay our staff. Will you start now?
