Almost seven months after the director of a Brattleboro homeless shelter was axed to death, the Groundworks shelter network was shaken by a hatchet-wielding local man. No-one was injured.
On April 6, police say Leah Rosin-Pritchard was killed by a resident of the Morningstar Shelter in Brattleboro. Zaaina Asra Zakirrah Mahvish-Jammeh was arrested for second-degree murder. In May she was found temporarily incompetent to stand trial, pending an August 9 court hearing for which VDC could find no information.
On Thursday, October 27, police say Tadros Hoth, 33, was arrested for aggravated disorderly conduct at the organization’s South Main Street dropoff shelter. He was reported to be intoxicated and creating a disturbance at the shelter around 8:10 a.m., according to Officer Washburn.
The investigation revealed that Hoth arrived at the shelter in an inebriated state and was denied entry to the locked building. While outside, he allegedly behaved in a disorderly manner and threatened staff members. At one point, Hoth was seen with a hatchet, banging it on a fence outside.
There were no individuals present outside the shelter at the time, and no injuries were reported. Hoth was taken into custody without any incident.
The hatchet he had been holding was later found nearby. Hoth was arrested and transported to the Brattleboro Police Department. He was lodged in lieu of $200 bail and is scheduled to appear in court today, October 30.
Revolver, Ruger rifle stolen from store – Police are investigating a burglary in which two guns were taken from Britton’s Lumber & Hardware store at around 4:50 a.m. on October 26
State police say a man stole a Smith & Wesson revolver and a Ruger rifle from the store’s gun racks. This is the second time the store has been burglarized within the year. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Trooper Jordan of the VSP Royalton barracks at 234-9933.
Oak seedlings victims of ongoing dispute – A 56-year-old woman from Plainfield was cited October 27 for unlawful mischief following an incident in Cabot last month. On September 5, authorities say they were notified of a vandalism at around 1:30 p.m.
Milk tanker collision yields charges – An October collision between a milk tanker truck and a passenger car led to the arrest of a South Burlington man on charges of driving under the influence of drugs, driving with a criminally suspended license and possession of a controlled substance.
The incident occurred around 1:21 p.m. on Route 15 near College Parkway, according to Sgt. Victor Bitca of the Colchester Police Department. The officer on scene witnessed the passenger car, driven by 47-year-old David Macomber II, collide with the westbound tanker, scattering debris across multiple lanes.
Both drivers reported no injuries, but the vehicles required towing from the scene. College Parkway was temporarily closed to motor vehicle traffic.
Partial lanes were reopened around 2:04 p.m. and the roadway was fully reopened by 3:12 p.m. Further investigation revealed that Macomber was operating the vehicle without the owner’s consent.
He was released on citation to appear in Chittenden County Superior Court on Dec. 21 to face charges of driving while license suspended, aggravated operation of a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent and possession of a controlled substance.
