A 61-year-old Waitsfield woman was killed Jan. 24 after a two-vehicle crash on Waterbury-Stowe Road in Waterbury.
State Police said Paula Breining was traveling south when her Honda CR-V crossed the center line and collided with a northbound Hyundai Tucson driven by Rohtash Kumar, 41, of Montpelier. Kumar and his passenger, Sita Devi, 43, of Montpelier, were transported to Central Vermont Medical Center with minor injuries.
Breining was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash remains under investigation.
Men die, critically injured in camper fires – On Sunday, Jan. 25, the Sharon Fire Department and South Royalton Rescue Squad were dispatched to a fire in a camper trailer on Route 14 in Sharon after numerous 911 callers reported seeing black smoke coming from the camper. Sharon Fire arrived, entered the camper and extinguished the fire. Sharon Fire located a man deceased inside the trailer.
A 65-year-old Bradford man was critically injured in a fire Saturday afternoon, Jan. 24, at a property on Goshen Road in Bradford. Firefighters located Mark Hewes inside a camper with burns to his arms, ears, neck and face.
Hewes was taken to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire, and later flown to Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. Investigators determined the fire was accidental and related to a portable heater.
DUI arrests:
• Matthew Ploof, 21, of Huntington, was arrested early Sunday, Jan. 25, on suspicion of driving under the influence after troopers responded to a disabled vehicle on Interstate 89 south in Waterbury. He was released with a citation to appear in court.
• Journi Luten, 25, of Sheldon, was cited for DUI after a crash Friday, Jan. 23, at the intersection of Vermont Route 105 and Vermont Route 236 in St. Albans. No injuries were reported.
• Matthew L. Tobin, 45, of Sharon, was arrested late Friday, Jan. 23, after troopers found his vehicle off the roadway on Strafford Road in Tunbridge and determined he had been operating while impaired.
