Ex-Marble Valley guard cited for smuggling contraband into jail

by Timothy Page

On February 2, the Vermont State Police received a call from Michael Dounetos, the Assistant Superintendent of the Marble Valley Correctional Facility. He informed them that David Orvis, a Correctional Officer, had been suspended from duty while an investigation took place.

During the investigation, it was discovered that Orvis had worked together with at least two inmates to bring illegal items, specifically tobacco, into the Marble Valley Correctional Facility. Orvis was paid electronically by the inmates for his involvement in smuggling the tobacco. Eventually, the Vermont State Police learned that Orvis had resigned from his position as a Correctional Officer with the Vermont Department of Corrections.

On May 10, Orvis met with members of the Vermont State Police at the Rutland barracks. He went through the necessary procedures and was given a citation. This citation requires him to appear in Rutland District Court – Criminal Division in Rutland, VT, on June 17, 2024, at 8:30 a.m.
