Cops nab bank robbery suspect Plunkett

Surveillance video from Plunkett’s most recent bank heist, a block from the Burlington Police station

The Burlington man suspected of perpetrating a string of bank robberies was arrested Friday afternoon in Burlington, Police Chief Jon Murad said in a press release yesterday.

At about 3:40 PM Friday, November 1, detectives with the Burlington Police Department and members of the BPD’s Emergency Response Unit took James Plunkett, 39, into custody on Riverside Avenue. Over the past several days, Plunkett has allegedly committed three bank robberies in Burlington and one in Winooski, as well as an attempted burglary in Burlington.

“Locating and capturing him has been the BPD’s top priority during that time,” Murad said. “I am, once again, deeply appreciative of and impressed by the caliber of our city’s investigatory team. I also offer sincere thanks to the South Burlington Police Department, the Winooski Police Department, and the Vermont State Police Northern Drug Task Force, personnel from each of which have contributed to this investigation and apprehension. The next stages of the case are being facilitated with great assistance from partners at the Federal Bureau of Investigation, who will help us seek federal charges against Mr. Plunkett.”
