Colchester shooting victim ID’d as Burlington man with felony charge record

The victim in Sunday’s shooting at Fort Ethan Allen in Colchester was identified by Colchester police as Dontay Canada, 41, of Burlington.

At 4:04 pm, Colchester dispatch received a 911 call reporting that a male – later identified as Canada – had been shot in the area of Ethan Allen Avenue in Colchester. Arriving police units from Colchester and Winooski located the male and provided immediate care.

Canada is still listed in critical condition at UVM Medical Center, Colchester police say. Sunday evening, officers from Saint Albans Police Department and Franklin County Sheriff’s Office located and stopped a vehicle connected with this investigation. The vehicle was seized, and the occupants interviewed. No arrests were made.

Vermont State Police Crime Scene Search Team was on the scene Monday assisting in evidence collection. Colchester Police investigators are being assisted by the Chittenden County Violent Crime Task Force coordinated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF).

In April 2020, Canada was charged with lewd and lascivious conduct and assault and robbery and other crimes in connection with an incident in Newport.A local man out on bail is facing a slew of charges following an incident that took place Saturday night.

According to a report by the Newport Dispatch, Newport police say they heard a female screaming somewhere in the vicinity of the police department on April 4, at around 11:30 p.m.

Officers say they found a distraught young woman with hand and arm abrasions and a human bite mark on her left and right hands. She told officers that Canada, who was across the parking lot, had allegedly assaulted her and demanded money.

Several witnesses reported to officers that they had allegedly seen him assault the victim and heard him yell at her.Canada was charged and taken into custody. At the time of his arrest, he was out on bail for two separate cases with charges including resisting arrest, simple assault on a protected professional, assault with a deadly weapon, and unlawful trespass Police say he has six prior felony charges.
