Bennington hospital to build teen psych unit
By the Journal-Opinion A Barre family returned home from church on Sunday to find a barn with close to 200 animals inside had burned to the ground. Over 100 adult pigs, sheep, goats, and chickens plus 70-80 piglets were lost in the fire, according to WCAX-TV. “We were seeing the dead animals, you know. Clearly, they did not die a happy death. But then when you see the children of that family carrying a goat that is deceased across the yard, that is really the thing that is sad,” Barre Town Fire Chief Andy Lange told the television station. More than a dozen central Vermont fire departments responded to the scene, according to the Times Argus. |
| Bennington hospital to build adolescent psych unit The Green Mountain Care Board has approved a plan to build a new 12-bed psychiatric unit for adolescents aged 12-17 on the campus of the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center, reported Vermont Public. The state is kicking in $9.25 million for construction and $1 million for the first year of operating costs. The Brattleboro Retreat, which maintains the only other inpatient psychiatric unit for adolescents in Vermont, pushed back against the proposal. “[The Brattleboro] Retreat challenged some of the data that Southwestern Vermont Medical Center and the state used to support the need to build a new adolescent psychiatric unit.” The Bennington Banner reported that the proposed construction estimate has increased to more than $10 million since the initial application. Dartmouth-Hitchcock will provide the clinical team at SVMC. |
