After DUI charges, elected officials deal with consequences

Supreme Court restores Addison County prosecutor’s law license

Bennington legislator faces fourth-try arraignment in Barre this Thursday

By Guy Page

The Vermont Supreme Court Friday, April 19 restored the law license of Addison County State’s Attorney Eva Vekos.

Also, Rep. James Carroll (D-Bennington) will be arraigned in Washington County Superior Court this Thursday, April 25, more than two months after he was cited for DUI outside of the Vermont State House.

Vekos’ law license had been suspended following her arrest for DUI after allegedly driving impaired to a crime scene in Bridport in late January. The license was suspended because the Court said she had not responded adequately to its request for information.

But the April 19 statement said that problem has been resolved, so Vekos can now practice law, including trying cases in court – a task relegated to her two deputies during her suspension.

“Disciplinary Counsel agrees that respondent has replied to his prior inquiries about the reasons, nature, and causes of her now-concluded medical leave. Consequently, Disciplinary Counsel does not oppose respondent’s request to dissolve the interim suspension,” the court said Friday.

Carroll’s arraignment is the latest in several scheduled court appearances since police stopped him as he pulled his car into a state parking lot at the so-called Pink Lady, a historic multi-story building which serves as the home for the Joint Fiscal Affairs Office at 1 Baldwin Street.

After processing Carroll, city police said they ordered him to appear in Vermont Superior Court in Barre at 8:30 a.m. March 7 on the DUI charge. According to a report in the Bennington Banner, that hearing was postponed until April 4 because Carroll was in rehab. A big snowstorm closed the court on April 4. A miscommunication that the judge acknowledged was the court’s fault resulted in Carroll’s no-show on the scheduled arraignment on April 11.

A court official told VDC this morning that he is scheduled to be arraigned this Thursday, April 25.

In March, about two weeks after his arrest, Carroll lost his bid for re-election to the Bennington selectboard.
